bamboo bot

This installation enables a live plant to position the robotic arm that it rides on top of. bamboo bot has a control system that reads and utilizes the electrical noises found in a live lucky bamboo plant. The system uses an open source micro-controller connected to the plant to read varying resistance signals through the plant’s stalk. Using custom software, these signals are mapped in real-time to the movements of the joints of the industrial robot holding the plant. Thus, the movements of the robot are determined based on input from the plant. The plant grows toward a light positioned above it continually reshaping itself as the piece dances, maneuvers and responds in space.
